Range of oral surgery expertise from the skilled team that you know and trust
Surgical procedures largely involve accessing diseased or damaged tissues with special instruments and through means of an incision. This approach to treating conditions and restoring health requires significant skill. At SouthFork Dental, Dr. Bindu Kolli has considerable expertise in performing many different types of oral surgery.
This branch of dentistry applies surgical techniques to treat conditions that affect the health, function, and appearance of the oral cavity (mouth), as well as the supportive tissues of the jaws and face. Due to Dr. Kolli’s onsite capabilities, she rarely refers patients to specialists in the Plano, Frisco, and Irving, Texas areas. Our valued patients benefit from hassle-free, fairly priced, and safe surgical care delivered by the team they know and trust within an inviting and familiar environment.
Comprehensive oral surgical care
Every effort is made to preserve natural teeth; however, a badly damaged tooth may threaten the health of neighboring teeth and even other parts of your body. In these situations, extraction or removal of the tooth may be recommended. Some surgical procedures also support or facilitate treatment, ranging from tooth replacement to orthodontics/braces to straighten teeth.
Here are just a few of the ways Dr. Kolli has restored patients’ smiles and overall well-being with expert surgical care:
- Removal of non-impacted wisdom teeth – Wisdom teeth can be troublesome. The third molars at the back corners of the mouth develop comparatively late, during patients’ teens or early 20s, as they are “gaining wisdom.” Often, there is insufficient space to grow properly. Even when these molars erupt properly, they can still crowd and damage neighboring teeth. Dr. Kolli takes a proactive approach to monitoring and treating these non-essential teeth with highly skilled extraction techniques
- Removal of bicuspid teeth for orthodontic patients – Also known as “premolars,” the bicuspids between the back-most molars and the pointy canines may need removal to accommodate the repositioning of teeth with orthodontic appliances like braces. Otherwise, there may be inadequate space to move the teeth effectively. Extractions are largely recommended for “overbite” and other major bite imbalances
- Extraction of severely damaged essential teeth – Gum disease can irreparably damage teeth; this progressive process breaks down the supportive attachments that protect and hold a tooth in place. Teeth become loose in their sockets and may need to be replaced. Dental decay progressively erodes the hard tissue or tooth structure. Not all badly decayed teeth can be “saved” with root canal therapy. In these and other cases, such as certain types of fractures or injuries, a tooth will likely be removed
- Periodontal therapy – In advanced cases, Dr. Kolli may recommend flap surgery to remove diseased gums and to encourage healthy healing and treatment of advanced gum disease (periodontitis). Surgical techniques also build up or regenerate recessed and deteriorated gummy tissue and restore or achieve a more aesthetically pleasing gum line
- Bone grafting – The hard tissues or bone in the jaw may deteriorate due to severe, untreated gum disease as well as the loss of teeth. If teeth are not replaced promptly, the process of bone resorption occurs. Bone is lost because this supportive tissue no longer has the necessary stimulation of the teeth to retain their strength. We can build up the bone in the jaw by transferring or grafting donor tissue to the recessed site. This procedure may be recommended for gum disease treatment or to “prepare” the jaw for implant placement. The implant needs a strong foundation of healthy, dense, surrounding bony tissue
- Dental implant placement – Dr. Kolli has the expertise to handle every step of the implant process in-house. In addition to “preparing” the jawbone, she also precisely positions the “artificial tooth root” (implant) in the jaw. Other dental offices may only be equipped to restore the implant after it has been surgically placed by another dentist or specialist. Here again, this feature of our practice supports utmost convenience and a pleasant and stress-free experience. As appropriate, Dr. Kolli can even place the implants immediately during the same appointment as your extractions.
Dr. Kolli also regularly screens for pre-cancers, oral cancers, and other tissue anomalies. If a benign growth is identified, it can be removed surgically at our SouthFork Dental offices. All surgeries are administered with utmost care and painlessly with the use of local anesthetic. Relaxing oral or inhaled sedative options are also available.
